It's Okay If the House is a Mess...

I'm starting to get end of school busy.  It's the time of year when extra things like concerts, recitals, practices, projects, parties, banquets are added to our already full family schedule of piano lessons,  football practice, baseball practice, baseball games, church activities, dance lessons, Black Magic, seminary etc....  I stayed up late on Monday night working on a fun t-shirt project with my new Silhouette machine and baking 6 dozen chocolate chip cookies for Brinley's Black Magic rehearsals.  Two thirty a.m. late.  Not my smartest choice to function happily the next day!

By the end of Tuesday night I was beat.  I was in the kitchen doing a few dishes while the boys were packing their lunches.  I was feeling overwhelmed by my messy house and personal list of unaccomplished tasks.  Tanner, in a sing-song voice, started chewing me out (as only Tanner can!) about a quote he noticed on my bathroom mirror.  "Mom, that thing on your mirror says "it doesn't really matter if your house is a mess and your kids are in pajamas.  It just matters that you are having family scripture study, prayer and Family Home Evening."  YOU ARE FAILING.  You always make us do chores around the house and you always make us get dressed.  Your quote says you shouldn't be doing that."  I tried to explain to him that the point was to do the most important things...gospel centered things... and it was okay if other things weren't in perfect order.  He was having none of it.  However, it changed my perspective of my day.

Instead of heading to bed feeling defeated, I went to bed feeling lifted up.  We are doing our best to do the most important things.  I know as our family keeps our focus on Jesus Christ, we can be strengthened, lifted and guided everyday.
