Basketball Camp

I took Tanner up to a two day basketball camp at Lubbock Christian University.  Many sports camps are closed for this summer, BYU's and Texas Tech's for example, but this is the one we were planning on anyway.  It was on Thursday and Friday from 1-4:30.

Our trip up was pretty quiet.  Tanner had his headphones in and was listening to music.  I scrolled through my phone some because he was driving.  Tanner drove willingly, and he is a good enough driver at this point that I could mostly just relax which was pretty great.

As we drove into town, we were looking for a place to eat.  Tanner wanted Chic Fil A or Canes.  I am not a Canes fan, but I wanted to please Tanner.  He and Parker always loudly express their desire for Canes when we out of town.  They start an obnoxious "CANES, CANES, CANES" chant in the car as we are trying to make a family decision on were to eat.

Apparently Tanner is not really a Canes fan either. We ordered $15 of fried chicken strip combos.  He ate 3 of his four chicken strips and none of his fries.  I was trying to choke down my flavorless, dried on the inside, greasy on the outside chicken strips when he casually mentioned he didn't really like Canes...he just loved the garlic toast.

WHAT THE HECK?

We have been stopping at Canes to please the boys and quiet their Canes chant for the garlic toast?  My kids meal didn't even come with garlic toast.  I was definitely rolling my eyes and wishing we had found a Chic Fil A instead.  Crazy kid.

Tanner seemed to like his camp.  Both days he came out sweaty and tired.  He didn't give me many details, and I didn't push it.  Once we got back to Odessa, I listened as he and Brian discussed more of the camp.  Brian knew better questions to ask, and Tanner explained with enthusiasm some of the new and challenging drills he learned.   I'm glad he felt it was helpful.
I had to snap these pictures because it's really so weird seeing this many people in one space.  And it's soooo weird that it is weird.  You know what I mean?  This has been totally normal my whole life and only recently taboo due to concerns of spreading Covid-19.  Texas is opening up though.  I hope we don't regret it.

Some fun things I did on the trip: relax in the hotel room, get four free donuts at Krispy Kreme on National Donut Day (I shared), visited Costco, walked the mall, and even braved "the Carona" and got a massage.  I figured since I was risky enough to  take Tanner to a 100 person sports camp and stay in a hotel room than I could get a massage.  It was bliss!

A couple of other memorable parts of our trip I want to jot down.

We ate at Chuy's, a yummy Mexican food restaurant, for dinner and had so much leftover food we took it home and ate it for breakfast/lunch the next day.
I ordered a "Bigger than Your Mouth" chicken, bean, rice and cheese burrito.  He ordered beef fajitas.  They brought out a chicken fajita plate first and then realized they brought the wrong order and brought out beef....thus the extra food.

I worked out in the dark in this tiny space in our hotel room because I didn't want to wake Tanner and the hotel gym was closed.  Mostly I did abs and a Pilates back workout on YouTube.  Then I went for a little walk around our grouping of hotels.
I was able to have a wonderful "Come Follow Me" study group over Zoom with Britney, Amberly Brown, and Monica Jackman.  I loved being outside in the sunshine and learning more about the gospel of Jesus Christ with friends.  We discussed Alma 5-7 this week.  I admire these ladies so much and loved hearing their gospel insights.

Brit has been part of this Friday morning group for awhile.  She invited me to join a couple of weeks ago.  I am so grateful.  At times during the quarantine, I have felt a little friendless and sad.   This meeting up virtually with friends has lifted me up.  You can't really go wrong when you are discussing ways to be a better follower of Jesus Christ with amazing women you admire.
Tanner and I squeezed in a quick game of TopGolf (really 4oreGolf) on Friday morning before his camp.  We were horrible.  It was embarrassing.  And honestly, I think Tanner just wanted to go there for the donuts and dips.  Kind of reminded me of Canes all over again.  😐
I took my laptop with me so I could work on Father's Day photo orders if needed.  Shortly after we got home, I realized I left it in the hotel room in Lubbock.  😭😭😭  I was frustrated with myself and not looking forward to the 5 hours round trip drive to retrieve it.  Luckily, Brian mentioned I could ask a friend of ours who has family in Lubbock when she might be there.  Penny was actually up visiting her daughter right then and rescued my computer.  Bless her!!!

Too soon our little road trip was over and we headed home!  Tan drove like this for about an hour because we left straight from the camp, and he was super sweaty.  Once we hit the Dairy Queen in Lamesa, we switched drivers and he pulled on a clean shirt.
Overall, it was a nice 36 hour trip with my boy.
